Jane Barker 29th June 2010

I've just heard the sad news of Jeff's passing and it has saddened me greatly. I have not had any contact with Jeff for some 20 plus years but way back in the 80's I too had the pleasure of working for him when he bought Breaston Motors (Mazda) off my Uncle, Jack Barker. The previously written words of Mary were so true and portrayed the Jeff that I too remember. It made me think back and I have one or two funny stories that I remember. My uncle (Jack Barker) was known to whistle quite a lot (old school garage man)and it got to the point where we knew he was 'on the way' because we could hear him whistling. On the day that Jeff took over Breaston Motors he came back from the solicitors and we were all a bit on edge but he came in and said well that's that then. I said right there's two things I want to ask you, One, what do we call you? Two, Can you whistle?....! His answers were "Jeff of course" and "Whistle"!!!! We explained and he liked that and it broke the ice!!!!!! He never did though!!! Another time I wore a black & white dress to a promotion day that we held (he did like his promotion days did Jeff)anyway at the last minute I put a red scarf round my neck because I thought it needed that little something else! In Jeff's eyes though I had dressed in 'Leadley' colours and insisted on knowing if my underwear matched too. I did have a photo of him asking me this question and we were both laughing our heads off, I think drink was involved! It usually was. Silly memories but mine. He made an impression on me that's for sure. Lovely Lovely Man.
